Kudoboard's pricing page doesn't list a free board: single boards start at $6.99 and go up to $19.99 for unlimited posts. If you want a group card or group gift without paying, you have a few real options. A lot of "free" tools only let you start for free and charge you when you send.
This guide sorts the alternatives into three groups: free with no catch, free for small groups, and free to start but paid to send. Prices come from each company's own pricing page.

So for a team farewell with 30 people writing in, you're looking at $9.99 or $19.99 per board. That's not much for one card, but it adds up when an office sends a few a month, and plenty of people would rather not pay for something they could do another way.

Free alternatives with no catch
GiftRound (if the point is to collect money)
GiftRound is free for organizers and contributors, with no fees, and includes a digital group card. The money is paid out as a FlexCard e-gift card that can be spent at 95+ retailers, so it suits "everyone chips in for a gift" more than a heartfelt card. It works in the UK, Ireland and the US. The trade-off is that the recipient gets a gift card, not cash or a bank transfer.
A shared slide deck or document
A Google Slides deck with one slide per person is free and almost everyone can edit one. It works best in an office where everyone already uses the same tools. You have to chase people yourself, the design is up to you, and on a phone it's fiddly to add a photo. It's a fine stopgap, but it rarely feels like a gift.
A group chat
For family and friends, a WhatsApp group where everyone sends a voice note is free and takes no setup. The downside is that the result is a scattered chat, not a gift: twenty separate voice notes mixed in with "did everyone send theirs?". Free for small groups: VoiceHug

Hearing twenty people you love, one after another, lands differently from reading their posts on a board. People also tend to say more when they don't have to be on camera or find the right words to type.
Where Kudoboard is the better pick: if your team wants photos and GIFs on a board, needs Slack or Teams integration, or wants a printed keepsake, Kudoboard does those things and VoiceHug doesn't.
Free to start, paid to send
These are good products, but none of them is free in the end, so it's worth knowing before you invite 40 people.
- Thankbox: "Start for free, pay when sending." Classic is $5.99 and Premium is $9.99 (which adds videos and voice notes). If you collect money, contributors pay a card fee (2.9% + $0.19 in the US).

- Tribute: free to start; the DIY plan costs $35 for up to 30 minutes of video, and the Concierge service, where Tribute's editors put it together, is $99.
Not free at all
GroupGreeting costs $5.99 per card (plus tax), with unlimited signers and pages, according to its help center. It's close to Kudoboard in price and format.
Which one should you use?
- Your team needs a card for a colleague and nobody wants to pay: a shared slide deck, or VoiceHug if the team is 6 people or fewer.
- You're collecting money for a gift: GiftRound if a gift card is fine; Thankbox if you want a card and a pot together and don't mind the fees.
- It's for family (a birthday, a parent, a grandparent): VoiceHug. Six people is often the whole immediate family, and a voice gift is something they'll play again.
- You want photos, GIFs and a printed version: pay for Kudoboard. It's good at exactly that.
- You want a polished video: VidDay or Tribute, and budget $15–$60.
