Race-day pep talks from friends: a marathon surprise for your runner

A runner who has trained for months knows what the hard miles feel like. A surprise recording of the people who watched them train can be waiting on their phone when they need it.

Short version: Ask friends for 30 to 60 seconds each: name first, one training memory, one reason they can do it. VoiceHug mixes them into one MP3 that you send the runner before race day. No app is needed for the runner, and it works for a marathon, half marathon, triathlon or HYROX.

Timeline

  1. 2 weeks before

Make the list: training partners, family, colleagues. Record your own message and send the link.

  2. 10 days before

Remind everyone who has not recorded.

  3. 4 days before

Close it and listen through once.

  4. 2 days before

Send the MP3 to the runner (or their partner) to load on their phone or watch.

  5. Race day

They press play at the start line, or save voices for the hard miles.

Message to send

Jess is running the marathon on 12 April and we're making her a surprise: a recording of everyone cheering her on that she can play during the race. Could you record 30 to 60 seconds by 1 April? Say your name, then something specific: a training run you remember, why she can do this, or what she should think about at mile 20. Keep it a secret!

Change the names and dates, then paste it into your group chat or email.

Example (made up, not a real customer)

Example: how a VoiceHug for a marathon runner could work

Say a runner's partner wants to surprise her before her first marathon. He invites her running club, her sister, two colleagues and her parents, twelve people, and gives them ten days.

He asks each person for 30 to 60 seconds: their name, a training memory, and one thing to tell herself when it gets hard. The finished recording is about eight minutes.

The night before the race he sends her the MP3. She plays the first voice at the start line, and saves the rest for later miles. The chapters could look like this:

  1. Tom (organizer)
  2. Tuesday club
  3. Rachel
  4. Owen and Kate
  5. Mum and Dad

What to ask people to say

  1. Say your name first, so the runner knows who is talking.

  2. A specific training memory: the cold morning run, the long Sunday, the day they nearly gave up and did not.

  3. Why you know they will finish. Specific beats general.

  4. A line for the hard part. Mile 20, the last lap, the final station in a HYROX race. Ask a few people to write for the bad moment, not only the start.

  5. Keep it to 30 to 60 seconds. Runners have limited attention in the middle of a race.

How the runner listens

The finished recording is an MP3. The runner downloads it, or opens the link, and plays it from their phone with earphones. Chapters let them jump to a voice. Check the race rules first: some races restrict or ban headphones. If they cannot wear them during the race, they can play it on the morning, on the way to the start or after they finish.

Which events it suits

Anything with a long, hard effort: marathon, half marathon, ultra, triathlon, a cycling event, HYROX or a charity challenge. For team events or relays, ask the whole team for messages.

What usually goes wrong

  • Headphone rules. Check before you promise they can listen during the race.
  • Spoilers. Do not tell the runner before race week if it is a surprise.
  • Messages that are all the same ("good luck!"). Ask for one specific memory each.
  • Too long. Eight to ten minutes is plenty. Chapters let them pick.

The same job with VoiceHug

VoiceHug collects the pep talks from a link, with no app or account, and makes one MP3 with a chapter for each voice. The runner needs nothing but a phone.

  1. The VoiceHug start page on a phone: a box for who it is for and a red microphone button.

    1. Record your own message

Say who it is for and record first, so everyone hears how it sounds.

  2. The organizer's page for "Birthday for Maria" with a button to send the link to a group chat.

    2. Send one link to the group

Post it in the family or friends group chat, or send the WhatsApp invite. You see who has recorded and can remind anyone invited by email.

  3. The page a contributor opens: "Birthday for Maria", a prompt about a favourite memory, and a microphone button.

    3. Each person records on their phone

They open the link and tap the microphone, with prompts if they need ideas. No app, no account. They can also send a WhatsApp voice note.

  4. The gift page "For Maria": 8 voices, 10 minutes, a player and the list of everyone in it.

    4. They get one recording

VoiceHug levels every voice, puts a short pause between them and makes one MP3 with a chapter for each person, plus a gift page to send.

Questions

How do I surprise a runner with messages from friends?
Send everyone one link, ask for 30 to 60 seconds with a name and a specific memory, and combine them into one MP3 to send before race day.
Can the runner listen during the race?
Only if the race allows headphones. Check the rules. Otherwise they can play it before the start or afterwards.
Does the runner need an app?
No. The gift page plays in a browser, and the MP3 plays in any music or audio app.
How much does it cost?
